Are Syrian truffles the same as the European kind?

i know in syria there are truffles that grow in the spring i think, when i lived in lebanon we would buy them everyday during their very short season. they're very tasty too. I know the european truffles are very famouse and go for hundreds of dollars a pound, the syrian kind are expensive but not even neerly as much as the european type. So i just wanna know if theyr the same thing or what, cuz theyr so much cheeper from there. they look like small lumpy brown potatoes.....
