AQA A2 Biology help! Absorption of mineral ions by the sedges?

I would imagine it's because the air has lots nitrogen. If they can't get enough nitrogen from their soil, they can funnel air to their roots which then are able to use the nitrogen like they would if they extracted it from the soil.
